Medicaid Claims Data: Using T-MSIS for State Health Outcomes Research
Curated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), T-MSIS, or the Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System, is a comprehensive database of claims made to state Medicaid and CHIP programs by their beneficiaries. This includes data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
This Medicaid claims data has a number of applications for researchers and policymakers. This data, among other reasons, is especially useful because it includes data from all 50 states and Washington D.C. (along with data from U.S. territories Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Despite its usefulness, not everyone is familiar with this data, how it could be used in research, and how it can be accessed.
In this SHADAC brief, we go over:
- What T-MSIS is
- Why it is useful
- How researchers have used it, and
- How you can request this data yourself
