Sharon Long Presents with Sherry Glied at NY Health Care Symposium

November 09, 2010

November 9, 2010:  SHADAC Senior Economist Sharon Long was invited to present about Massachusetts’ health reform at the twenty-first annual Symposium on Health Care Services in New York.

The symposium, which took place on November 3, 2010, was sponsored by the Greater New York Hospital Association and United Hospital Fund and focused  on national health reform with an emphasis on what New York can learn from Massachusetts’ 2006 state reform initiative. Dr. Long spoke at the event’s plenary session, sharing keynote speaker duties with Sherry Glied, Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Long reported on the common ground shared by New York and Massachusetts and the potential for substantial gains under health reform.  New York starts from a base of coverage that is very similar to that of pre-reform Massachusetts, suggesting that New York could, like Massachusetts, see significant gains in insurance coverage, access to and use of health care, and the affordability of care for individuals under national health reform.
